Battle Hill Museum

The assistant den leader (Jim) and I (Bob) with help from a couple of parents (Gary and Mark) took the entire den on a trip to the Battle Hill Museum of Natural History in Battle Creek, Iowa, as a part of earning the Naturalist pin. On the way, the boys worked on activities to earn the Traveler pin. Below are some of the remembered highlights of the trip:

I remember when we went to the museum in Battle Creek. I would say that my most favorite exhibit was the two-headed pig. The best thing that I learned - that there is a two-headed cow.

We learned a lot of cool stuff. First, there are some cool facts. One is that some Indians were around many years back. A second fact I learned is how they preserved animals when I saw an octopus in a jar of formaldehyde. That was our cool trip to the museum.

We went to the Natural History Museum and I learned how many hours it takes to skin an elephant. My favorite exhibit would probably be the cave exhibit. We also played in the museum and we spied on the adults. We almost got caught, but we escaped. Later we got caught – aw man! I also saw a display of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. The label said there was only four known to be in existence.

On the drive there, we learned to work a map. It was sort of hard, but I did it. When we got there, I was amazed to see the animals and skeletons. What I was most interested in was in the stuffed animals – they looked real but weren’t. I also thought what was fascinating was at the Pizza Hut (on the water in Ida Grove.) Feeding the ducks and geese was cool, too. When we went home, we did more mapping stuff. I had a little trouble, but I did it and got my (Traveler) badge.

One noteworthy display contains several black-footed ferrets, the rarest mammal in North America. The U.S. government spends a lot of money to raise and reintroduce black-footed ferrets back into the wild. Unfortunately, most ferrets do not survive the transition. The museum has about $40,000 of the unfortunate ferrets on display.

My personal favorite exhibit is the snow leopard.
