Troop Summer Camp

2011 Troop Summer Camp - Mitigwa

We left with 9 boys and came home with the starts of young men. Fifteen Scouts and Scouters took off for Camp Mitigwa to enjoy another summer camp. This trip was a little different from those in the past. The heat and humidity were high throwing our adventure in into a level 3 heat advisory. We had to set up the camp tents upon arrival and check in was at our campsite. Things went well and we were able to get camp up and running by dinner time. The first night was a little difficult but our leaders were able to finally get everyone in bed due to the heat and for some being in camp tents without mosquito netting.  Monday morning started out with the Polar Bear swimming (0630), on to our presented the colors to the camp (0750), breakfast (0800), and then on to their Merit Badge or 'New Beginning' programs. The boys enjoyed their selected programs and had time to try out other activities available at camp (e.g. black powder and rifle shooting, archery, tomahawk throw, and tower climbing). Our Baden Powell project started out leveling dirt that was to cover truck ruts in Osage to leveling dirt out in three other spots around our campsite in Piegan as well as digging out dirt in front of our latrine and putting rock down so we could eliminate our mud problem due to a leaking faucet washer. It became obvious on Tuesday afternoon that the everyone needed to be able to get in the pool to cool off from the 120+ heat index. The problem was there was any pool time assigned for the boys. Our leaders worked with the camp staff to create a late night swim opportunity for the entire camp. Several of our leaders volunteered and worked the deck so there was adequate supervision of the water. This swim was well attended and then worked into most of the rest of the evenings. Thursday night was family night and thank you to those who came up and spent time with the Troop. One of our Scouts celebrated his birthday and received a couple of presents from the Troop. They really loved seeing you.

Our participants will definitely have stories of fun and bravery to share with family and friends.
