2010 Webelos Summer CampWe left with 12 boys and came home with the starts of young men. Twenty three Scouts and Scouts took off for Camp Mitigwa to enjoy another summer camp. We found the opportunity to do the usual Scouting activities of swimming, making wood projects, learning about our past with the ORFs, enjoying good food, and camp campfires. This year we experienced new things. This camp was the first time Cub Scouts were able to go out on Lake Fischer in canoes. We even got to learn Hazardous Weather first hand. After many of the adults finally got the Scouts to sleep, we were woken up because a severe thunderstorm had changed it course to the east to one straight south over our camp. The entire camp was huddled in Bear Creek Lodge for another 5 hours. We were fortunate that our parents had skills need for the task. Matt Ireland assisted the camp staff with setting up a command center and then during breaks in the weather went out to check damage to the camps while Dean Vrba worked as weather spotter. We were very lucky that most of the tree damage happened east of the swimming pool. This meant the camp sites were only hit by high winds and not trees. After breakfast the Scouts and Staff went to work cleaning up each of our own sites and then worked on the program grounds. In a matter of 2 hours programs were running and the boys were able to continue working on their achievements. Our participants will definitely have stories of fun and bravery to share with family and friends.
